Ethel Skakel Kennedy (born April 11, 1928) is the widow of late Sen. and former Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy.
Early life
Born in Chicago, Illinois to Ann Brannack, a Roman Catholic, and George Skakel, a Protestant, Ethel was raised Catholic in Greenwich, Connecticut. Her father was the founder of the very successful Great Lakes Carbon Corporation.[1] She attended the all-girls Greenwich Academy[2] [3]in Greenwich, as well as the Convent of the Sacred Heart in the Bronx. In September 1945, Ethel began her collegiate education at Manhattanville College of the Sacred Heart (then located in Manhattan), where she met Jean Kennedy, sister of her soon-to-be husband, Robert F. Kennedy, and the two became friends and roommates.
Marriage to Robert F. Kennedy (1950–1968)
Ethel met Robert F. Kennedy (Bobby) during a skiing trip to Mont Tremblant Resort in Quebec, Canada during the winter of 1945. At the time, Robert was dating Ethel's sister, Patricia. Eventually that relationship ended and
Ethel and Bobby started seeing each other. Ethel campaigned for Bobby's brother, John F. Kennedy, in his 1946 campaign for United States Congress, and wrote her college thesis on his book Why England Slept.
Bobby and Ethel became engaged in February 1950, and were married on June 17, 1950 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greenwich.
Ethel's wedding dress and bridal party gowns were created by noted New York City fashion designer Mamie Conti. As newlyweds, Ethel and Bobby moved to Charlottesville, Virginia, where they lived while Bobby finished his last year at the University of Virginia Law School. Their first child, Kathleen, was born on July 4, 1951. After Bobby graduated with his law degree, the family settled in the Washington, D.C. area and Bobby went to work for the Department of Justice. However, that path did not last long as Bobby was asked by his family to manage John F. Kennedy's 1952 successful Senate campaign in Massachusetts.
Throughout the 1950s, Robert Kennedy worked for the federal government in investigatory roles for the Senate Subcommittee on Investigations with the notoriously anti-Communist Senator Joe McCarthy and as chief counsel for the Senate Democrats. In 1956, the Kennedys purchased Hickory Hill from Bobby's brother John and his wife, Jackie. They needed a larger house, since Ethel was pregnant with their fifth child. This enormous 13 bedroom, 13 bath home was
situated on six acres in McLean, Virginia.
In contrast to John and Jackie Kennedy, Robert and Ethel held many get-togethers at their home. Whether it was a pool party
or a formal dinner party, the guest list was impressive and eclectic. Journalist Roger Mudd remembers meeting John Lennon at one such party. Other notable invitees included the Secretary of the Interior Stewart Udall, entertainer Judy Garland, dancer Rudolf Nureyev and historian Arthur Schlesinger, who found himself thrown into the pool fully clothed where Ethel was also already swimming fully clothed. The 11 Kennedy children added to the wild atmosphere at Hickory Hill. Notoriously, Robert Jr. had a zoo in the basement.
It was not unusual to see reptiles, a seal, an anteater, miniature ponies and even an elephant on the grounds [5]. Jackie found the children so wild that she did not allow Caroline and John Jr. to play with their cousins. [4]
Due to her strict Catholicism, Ethel reportedly objected when her children's private school began to teach the Theory of Evolution[5].
RFK assassination (1968)

Just after midnight on June 5, 1968, her husband was shot by Sirhan Sirhan. He died 26 hours later. Ethel and her children were devastated. President Lyndon Johnson declared a day of mourning. In 1969, Sirhan was convicted of Robert Kennedy's murder and sentenced to death. In 1972, the
sentence was commuted to life imprisonment after the California Supreme Court invalidated that state's death penalty as it
existed at that time.
Life after the assassination (1968–present)
Frequently throughout the 1970s, Ethel was escorted to dinners, parties and the theater by singer Andy Williams, a family friend. However, she never engaged in any romantic relationships with another man following her husband's death.
Citing her Catholicism, she had said she would never marry again.
In October 2003, the Boston Globe reported that Ethel was selling the legendary residence for $25 million [6]. By 2008, still unsold, the asking price has been cut in half to $12.5 million, with the understanding that the historic
mansion (which served as headquarters to Union General George B. McClellan in the Civil War) is in need of a multi-million dollar renovation.
As of 2007, Ethel continues to live at the Kennedy Compound in Hyannisport.
During the 2008 presidential election she endorsed Illinois Senator Barack Obama[7] (as did her children Max and Rory, though another three, Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. and Kerry Kennedy, at first publicly endorsed Senator Hillary Clinton, in mid-2007).

The rise and fall of the
Lemurian civilization cannot be accurately documented, though many have gone in quest of this mythological continent. Lost
civilizations have been known to rise and fall - or just appear and disappear without explanation.
As with Atlantis one can only speculate as to what happened, based on archaeological evidence, legends,
theories pieced together by researchers, and for some, metaphysical channelings.
The exact location of Lemuria varies
with different researchers and authors, though it is part of the mysteries of the Pacific region flowing into the American
continent, just as Atlantis is linked to the Atlantic land areas that stretch to the Mediterrean Sea. Wherever you believe
the location of Lemuria to be, it is linked with the Ring of Fire. This area has become active with a Tsunami in December
26, 2004, powerful earthquakes and volcanoes that continue, after being dormant for many years. It would seem that the legends
of ancient Lemuria speak to us once again with warning signs - as they supposedly did to the Lemurians - before the continent
- or group of islands - fell into the sea.
The fate of Lemuria, also known as Pacifica, Mu, and what Cayce called
Zu or Oz, is not unlike that proposed for Atlantis. It is much like the destiny of humanity foreseen in our timeline by prophets
of old and modern-day clairvoyants. The legends are all the same ... a thriving, advanced culture that suddenly manifested
out of nowhere. Their origins and downfall are linked to destruction when their continent sank beneath the 'sea' due to natural
cataclyms and human imbalance.
Possible Physical Evidence of Lemuria

The idea of the Lemurian continent first appeared in the works of Augustus
Le Plongeon, (1826-1908) a 19th century researcher and writer who conducted investigations of the Maya ruins in the Yucatan.
He announced that he had translated ancient Mayan writings, which allegedly showed that the Maya of Yucatan were older than
the later civilizations of Atlantis and Egypt, and additionally told the story of an even older continent of Mu, whose survivors
founded the Maya civilization. Later students of the Ancient Maya writings argue that Le Plongeon's "translations" were based
on little more than his vivid imagination.
Metaphysics and Metaphors
Reality is Myth and Metaphor - Magic
and Mirrors - stories created in 'time' for the experiencer - projected through the eye or lens of the camera into the matrix
to be perceived consciously as if virtual reality. ALL is projected illusion in the Alchemy of Time and Consciousness - ALL
are parallel running programs through which we consciously experience simultaneously.
Programs have inserts. If a

Sumer is an example of a programmed insert that sprang out of nowhere as an advanced civilization -
then disappeared.
There are those who believe that Lemuria suddenly appeared with a full-blown culture. This has spawned
many interesting theories, including visits from extraterrestrials who introduced a new species of genetically engineered
humans to replace their slow-witted ancestors.
This too links with other creational theories about humans being seeded by gods
or aliens.
Most of what is written is a metaphor - linking to the patterns of creation - sacred geometry. It is about
spiraling consciousness that moves from higher frequencies of thought - a higher harmonic - to slower - lower frequencies
as we experiencing many places at the same time. All realities are created based on the numeric blueprint of sacred geometry
- consciousness - the Golden Mean - Phi Ratio.
Metaphors
Let's examine the metaphors in the theories below
....
Channelers speak of Lemurians as originally coming from higher frequency - then descending into third dimension
for a physical experience. This parallels our human experience through the spiraling patterns of consciousness and a feeling
of change that is taking hold with human conscousness at this time. We were originally higher frequency beings in spirit form
who have descended into physical beings to experience linear time and emotion.
Planet Earth is the third planet from
the sun. It is physical - Reality experienced in third dimension - 3D. Some researchers consider the Lemurians the 'third
root race'. They believe that we are the fourth root race - 4=4th dimension=time] soon to become the 'fifth root race' as
we move into a Golden Age.
The descended Lemurians allegedly remained here for thousands of years - which seems odd
- as they did not mark time in years as we do. All of the timelines would be wrong.
Their continent sank into the
sea killing the physical souls. This is a metaphor for the souls returning to the sea of consciousness - the Lemurian grid
program insert - and seeking new experiences in new forms of light or physical embodiment.
Many see the end of a program
- and the evolution of consciousness as the movement into a Golden Age - gold being a metaphor for Alchemy of Consciousness
into awareness - the blue [electricity - the blueprint of our reality] and the gold [metal - magnetics.]

Mythology and Metaphysics
Return to the Goddess / Priestess
/ Feminine / higher frequency energies - Lemuria is often called Mu which sounds a lot like 'Moo' which takes us to 'cow goddesses'
- in particular Hathor an ancient Egyptian creational force. In Gaul we find Damona, Goddess of fertility and healing. Her
name means "divine cow". Cow Goddesses were linked to fertility and abundance. In the Celtic realms we find the Goddess of
the river, Boyne which means 'Mistress of the white cows'. Boann is a Goddess of bounty and fertility whose totem is the sacred
white cow.
Lemurian Pyramids
As with most ancient and lost civilizations - Lemurians would build pyramids
or ziggurats - step pyramids - linking them to their gods who live above [on higher frequency]. These would be places of worship
and sacrifice, or landing areas for spaceships. Pyramidal structures symbolize spiraling consciousness and ascension to the
place of the gods and goddesses who reside 'above' our reality in a higher plane of existence. Is there a link for the Lemurian
and the Mayan pyramids?
Some speculate that the Lemurians were at some point telepathically linked to the Dolphins.
Their tones were called "Dolphin Codes."
Lemurian Seed Crystals
Another theory is based on the notion
of 'seed crystals' in which the knowledge and story of Lemuria was encoded and stored in seed crystals just before Lemuria
fell. Later - in our timeline - the crystals would be discovered and their messages revealed helping those who find them reember
their fated destiny and how it parallels our experience. Are these crystals linked to the Mayan or other Crystal Skulls?
In
conclusion - I believe that the story of Lemuria - and other lost and ancient civilizations - and religious ideologies are
part of humanity's quest to remember that we are not physical beings searching for our spiritual selves - in as much as we
are soul sparks of light having a physical experience - which is about the end / evolve back into higher frequencies of consciousness
and total understanding of the nature of reality.

Anglo-American explorer, James Churchward was a close friend of Auguste
and Alice Le Plongeon. James Churchward, in books such as The Lost Continent of Mu (1931), wrote that the Motherland stretched
from the Hawaiian Islands to Fiji and from Easter Island to the Marianas.
Churchward wanted an ancient civilization
of his own, and using Le Plongeon's doubtful methodology set about 'discovering' one. His findings were set down in the five
main volumes of the Mu series published in from 1926 - 1931. The basic premise was by studying various ancient texts Churchward
had discovered the existence of a long lost continent with an advanced civilization that approximately 60,000 years earlier
had sunk below the Pacific Ocean after a cataclysmic earthquake. Sixty-four million people allegedly died. The Hawaiian Islands
and the Pacific Islands are the remaining mountain peaks of the lost continent.
Volume #1 - The Lost Continent of
Mu set out Churchward's theory utilizing a "vast knowledge of science, ancient art and history, mythology and the occult"
to recreate the splendor and doom of this hidden antediluvian world. Lemuria or Mu was about 5,000 miles long and 3,000 miles
wide. The Garden of Eden was not in Asia but on a now sunken continent in the Pacific Ocean. The Biblical story of Creation
came first not from the peoples of the Nile or the Euphrates Valley but from this now-submerged continent, Mu - the Motherland
of Man.
Volume #2 - The Children of Mu is the story of the pioneers of Mu. Sixty-three million people lived on the
now lost continent of Mu over 200,000 years ago. The children of Mu became the most influential people on Earth. Mu had an
incredibly sophisticated government, flowering culture and scientific technology. Much of the Lemurian civilization lived
in homes with transparent roofs. They built shelters, made clothing, food, and their own tools. They were free from stress
and disease, living in peace for hundreds of years. Their psychic abilities were highly developed - telepathy, astral travel
and teleportation making traditional communication devices unnecessary. They were primarily a vegetarian, agricultural, outdoor,
organic culture that worked in harmony with nature and the land.
Volume #3 - The Sacred Symbols of Mu, this volume
talks about the occult origins of ancient and modern religions. All religions have a common origin in the Sacred Inspired
Writings of Mu. The Lord's Prayer is to be found in The Sacred Inspired Writings of Mu. Evidence of the Mu religion dates

The Counterfactual... Year
of Barbelo 2003...

Preface, I'm not a particularly brilliant creative writer
so I'm going to suggest something and then retire away relatively gracefully to see what people make of it. This particularly
interested me because my recent reintroduction to the Gnostic Barbelites reminded me of all the inherently Christian bits
of ideology that still exist in my morals and preconceptions even as a staunch atheist. So this is an attempt at getting people
to think differently in terms of alternate histories - ways the world could have gone - with the objective of helping us to
realise the contingency of our own world, it's value systems and beliefs...
Year of Barbelo 196 AD:
The second
century Barbelite Christians believed that human bodies were vessels for fallen fragments of divine higher powers. Believing
that reproduction only drove the cycle of imprisonment, they ritually consumed semen (and menses, according
to some sources); they believed that the life energy bound therein would be bound to the soul of the one who
consumed them, and be able to escape this world with the eater's soul upon death. If the eater had not
gained enough energy and wisdom, he would be trapped by the Rulers and reincarnated again on Earth. The Barbelites used sexual fluids as the sacraments of the Eucharist. The suffering of Christ
was re-enacted whenever a new being was born. The Barbelites used non-reproductive sex to re-enact the
descent of spirit into matter without actually trapping the spirit in physical form. The
Barbelites, believing Yaldabaoth (Yahweh [YHWH]) was the vile bastard son of Barbelo, the pure reflection
of the true God's conscious, felt that, by the desist of humanity, they would transfer Barbelo's stolen
energy back to her, weakening the mad, tyrranical Yaldabaoth. Needless to say, the Barbelites were none too
beloved by less eccentric religious groups. They were wiped out en masse, courtesy the Christians.
But what if they weren't wiped out. What if - instead - Barbelite
Gnosticism became the major faith of the Western World - eventually taken up by Emperor Constantine to reinspire his empire.
What if Barbelite Gnosticism was a state religion...

of the Western world....

Well Christianity is pretty against people having sex outside wedlock, but all the evidence is that people have
been doing it pretty much since the beginning of time. You might use as a basis for any counterfactual thinking that Catholic
priests are supposed to be celibate and married to Christ - it could be that in order for the cult to have 'won' it would
have to split into a priest class and a follower class, where the priests tried to persuade people to have as much non-reproductive
sex as possible, lowering birth rates dramatically but far from totally - people having ten children - four of which died
- now have four - one of whom dies.
Discrimination on grounds of sexual act would be dramatically lower initially at least and indeed
in a subsequent renaissance that might happen again. The Church might have remained in the hands of the people rather than
become institutionalised to the same extent or it might not.
STDs would be much higher, but prostate cancer much lower. The status of women could have been dramatically
higher earlier, both because of the mother goddess and because of the celebration of less invasive penetrative sex... So with
those things in your head, WHAT COMES NEXT?

PS. Also "Caucasian"? If you're
talking in the colloquial "white" sense of the word, then I'm not sure that the middle eastern population we're starting with
fall under that classification - and if you're talking about the stricter now-out-of-use scientific classification, then you're
also talking about people who came to undertake many other religions including but not limited to some of the peoples of India,
many muslims and peoples of North Africa.

I guess maybe "European" is closer to what I meant.
I still think though that, since according to the Barbelite cosmology
childbirth isn't just frowned upon - it's actually ultimate sin which the whole religion is organised in opposition to - it
would be pretty difficult for the leaders of the religion to tolerate any births within the ranks of the faithful..
Possibilities:
i.maybe people who had children would be banished from the religious community, creating parallel religious and secular
societies. I suppose the Barbelite ideology would have to be persuasive enough to convince a certain percentage of the secular
offspring to take it up again, thus ensuring that it doesn't die out..
ii.maybe, as a more extreme version of what
you've suggested, an extremely small carefully monitored birth rate would be permitted in the name of self-preservation and
perpetuating the religion..
(I know I'm maybe going off on the wrong tack on this, but it's fun trying to get my head
around how a sect that prohibits breeding could succeed in becoming a dominant world religion..)

I can easily picture a world where STDs
bear the taint of sin.
What would be interesting, however, would be the institution of marriage, which is seen as
the cornerstone of society. Human emotions being what they are, I imagine serial monogamy might become the norm -- and/or
massive orgies, probably during major carnivals, like Mardi Gras.
Also, for the Barbelo-gnostics to be in a position
of authority, the Bible as we know it would not exist. Significant portions of the New Testament would be different, primarly
the omission Paul's writings. These are the ones that set up the prohibitions surrounding marriage, but also have something
to say about homosexuality, as well as setting out some of what we know about the Trinity, and the rule of celibate priesthood.
John would stay -- weird visions of the End Times. The Whore of Babylon, however, would
have a whole different vibe.
I think in this world, prominent citizens might be required to "make face" by having
a same-sex consort.
Prostitutes would probably be mainstream working class, if not considered elite professionals.
I imagine there'd also be a substantial historical precedent for sex-slavery. Like, maybe not in 2003, but up to the 1800s
at least and probably much later.
Racial boundaries, as a result, might be a lot harder to police. This may have an
opposite effect from what you'd expect -- ideas of racial supremacy might be even stronger, especially with the "no children"
meme adding to the opprobrium heaped on the offspring of slave-master unions. So possibly a minority snow-white sex-worker/priest
class, with a lot of mixed race middle class folks.
I'm not sure if democracy would catch on in quite the same way,
but I imagine queens would be far more common, and women would never have had to march to get the vote.
Populations
would definitely be smaller. I wonder... Christianity might have spread a lot faster, if the sexuality was attached to the
idea of eternal salvation and a single, omnipotent, loving God. Hmm.
The current debate on abortion would be almost
identical, only with scientists & "rationalists" taking a minority "pro-life" view, and fundamentalist Christians taking
the close majority "pro-choice" view.
The relationship between the Church and scientific rationalism would also be
somewhat different, probably, since gnosticism in all forms is based on personal revelation, not authoritative truth. Galileo
might never have been persecuted. Hard to say, though, since we monkeys seem to like authorities.
I wonder, also,
what urges would be repressed -- y'know, Freud's big thing was, "Hey, sex - it's pretty important! And we don't like to admit
we're thinking about it!"

if Emperor Constantine took up Barbelite Gnosticism, it would find a way to become authoritarian pretty darn quickly.
Most
of the authoritarianism in the early church can be traced to him, the first Christian emperor. (Or, more properly, "Christian").

But I think an anti-reproductive religion would have been self-limiting.

in the northern US of the 1700s, were also against sex, and are pretty much extinct.
If Constantine had championed it, it would probably have been a religion practiced publicly and in the Emperor's court, while
people practiced their real religion privately, and it would have died with him, as did Ikhnaton's solar monotheism and Julian's
"Apostasy."
But since preference for barbelite Christianity would have come at the cost of the "our" Christianity,
then the latter might not have gotten the critical boost it needed to become one of the Big Three monotheisms. There's an
excellent book by Karen Armstrong called something like the History of God, supposing Islam, Judaism
and Christianity arose and consolidated their hold in the Axial Age, about 400BC-600AD, when general historical
conditions favored it. That also suggests a niche existed and that a later Emperor might have seen which way the wind was
blowing and championed regular Christianity with roughly similar results.
So the world would have been very different,
but still not very barbelithic, except that that religion would probably have about as many adherents as Jehovah's Witnesses.
I like this, I just wish I knew enough about Gnosticism to imagine the alternate world instead of just playing, er,
Devil's Advocate.

"Gnosticism" is a single label for a bunch of different strands
of belief -- Barbelite Gnosticism being just one of 'em.
Emphasis
is on personal knowledge (gnosis) of the divine as opposed to scripture and traditional/authoritative sources of revelation.
There *is* a tradition (a set of beliefs) within these
gnostic strains, elements of which were accepted or rejected by various groups throughout history. So that set of beliefs
is by no means uniform from group to group.
The main thing all the gnostics have in common is that
they lost out to orthodox Christianity (as political entities) at about the same time Constantine adopted the faith.
I
wonder if the Barbelites would have been more plural and less monolithic than the version of Christianity that came to the
fore in the 300s -- less apt to condemn heretics, laying the foundation for
a far broader church.

Thanks! I'd picked up a few strands from
reading tons of Borges' stories; last week I was amazed to see Gnostic themes in Orson Welles' version of Kafka's "The Trial." Anyway...
You're
probably right about a kinder, gentler Christianity resulting. A possible example is the Ottoman Empire whose state religion
was of course Islam, but it was a more tolerant Islam than that practiced in Saudi Arabia. Non-Muslims were welcome there
as long as they paid taxes and didn't stir up trouble. There was a lot of intellectual ferment in the Ottoman Empire.
Oh.
Fertility images, like the classic Demeter and her Cornucopia, used a lot in American
art in the 1800s, would probably be unknown. Maybe Barbelo-Freud would discover repression of fertility drives? Also, the
ecstatic side of Christianity would be more respectable, and probably de rigeur, but maybe you'd only have to fake it on festival
days. A dark side of a religion like this could be outbreaks of mass panics, fundamentalist frenzy. Maybe the state would
make use of them and channel them into participatory public executions like the "salvagings" of Margaret Atwood's
"The Handmaid's Tale," only people wouldn't pull on a long rope but instead tear the
victims apart themselves.
Burning Man would be government-subsidized, and have darker connotations,
at least in states that had the death penalty...

Religions of aesceticism,
if they are to thrive, seem to very quickly generate more easily-consumable versions of themselves. A good example of this
is perhaps Pure-Land Buddhism, which offers potential enlightenment to those who can't find it though the path of wisdom,
or in other words, by doing the damned hard (and selfish) work of the aescetic. Even Catholicism as it is today would be a
good example. My impression of Catholic doctrine is that the real O.G.'s of the Catholic world are found amongst the priesthood
and the orders; the laiety have their place, but they are somehow less holy than their clergy. It's not that they actually
could or should all be ordained--they are in the position intended for them.
So anyway, I'd imagine that the Barbelo-Gnostics
would probably evolve a similar system: a real hard-ass Barbelo-Gnosis for the expert, and a Barbelo-lite Home Edition (TM)
for the people too concerned with raising crops to feed the priesthood to be able to go off and be awesome pervert-heretics
themselves.

In the beginning, before men were created, the Anunnaki –

So they gave Enlil lordship of the earth. He summoned the Igigi, calling down from heaven the lesser
gods, lower divinities without names, to do the work.
Besides tilling the soil, Enlil assigned to the Igigi the additional
tasks of digging canals, river beds and keeping their channels clear. For thousands of years, the Igigi toiled for the Anunnaki.
It was too much! They downed their tools and went as a group to the Ekur, Enlil’s citadel at Nippur, to demand relief.
When
the Igigi arrived before Enlil’s stronghold, he ordered his doorkeeper, Nusku, to bar the gate to keep them out. But
Nusku asked, “Why has your face become as pale as the tamarisk? Why do you fear your sons? Call the other gods and let
them help solve this thing.”
So Enlil summoned the others, including Anu from heaven, and Enki, lord of the Abzu.
Together, they stood on the ramparts of the Ekur and addressed the besiegers. “Why do you attack us?”
The
Igigi answered as one, “The work you have assigned us is killing; we can no longer bear it. We have put a stop to digging
and declared war.”
Then Enki took the gods inside to counsel them. “Why do we blame the Igigi? Their tasks
are too hard.
“Look,” he continued, “the goddess Mami is with us. Let her create mortals, creatures
to be our servants and to do our work. Then we can put the yoke of Enlil on these beings and let the Igigi return to heaven.”
The
gods agreed and asked Mami to produce such creatures. But the Goddess of Midwifery demurred. “It is not prudent for
me to attempt all this. Choose Enki instead, because he is wise and makes things right. If he will prepare clay suitable to
the task, I will birth it.”
Enki responded, “If we use pure clay to make these new creatures, they will
be like the animals, without intelligence. To make them capable of bearing the yoke of Enlil, we must slay one of the gods
so his flesh and blood can be mixed with the clay to be made into a man. Then what we create will be god and man mixed together.”
The
gods seized Geshtu-e, a god of wisdom, and slaughtered him. When his flesh and blood were taken and mixed with the clay, a
ghost came into being so that none should ever forget him, or fail to remember that the new creature called man was part mortal
and part divine.
Mami took the mixture and pinched off fourteen pieces, to create seven males and seven females. She
presented them to the Anunnaki, saying, “I have done all you asked. You have slain a god of intelligence and mixed his
flesh and blood with clay so I could engender men. I relieve you of wearisome work by imposing your yoke upon them. I have
also bestowed upon them the ability to use the spoken word, so they may call to one another to help fulfill their tasks. Let
each man choose a woman to wive so Ishtar can bless them with healthy children, to fill the earth with generations upon generations
of servants.”
It was in this manner and for these reasons that man was created.
Twelve
hundred years went by and the people grew numerous. The land became filled with them and their unceasing clamor. Enlil said, “The
noise men make has become too much; I am losing sleep. Let Namtar come up from the depths of the Netherworld and distribute
disease among them, so that their numbers and uproar may be reduced.”
The Herald of Death strewed sickness back
and forth across the countryside and many died. A wise man in Shuruppak, by name of Atra-hasis, called upon Enki. “How
long are the gods going to plague us? Will illness and death afflict us forever?”
Enki advised Atra-hasis, “Call
together the elders. Speak to them; tell them to not worship their gods or take them offerings. Instead, let them build a
house for Namtar in Shuruppak and let each household bake a loaf of fresh bread and take it to his door.”
The
people listened and did as Enki advised. Namtar’s house was filled with fresh bread and surrounded with its pleasant
aroma. The Herald of Death was shamed by the multitude of offerings. He drew back his hand so that disease abated. The people
regained their health and the land returned to prosperity.
Another twelve hundred
years passed and
the people again became numerous. The Earth grew crowded and filled with a terrific din. Enlil said, “Once more, the
noise made by men is causing me to lose sleep. Let’s cut off their food. Let my son, Ninurta, shut the sluice gates
of heaven so that drought comes. Let crops fail and the people perish.”
When drought had held the land in its
grip for six years and the people had become famished, Atra-hasis again went to Enki for help. “Call together the elders,”
the god said. “Tell them not to worship their gods or make offerings to them. Instead, build a house for Ninurta. Then
let each household take of what flour they have and bake a loaf of fresh bread to take to his door.”
Again, the
people followed Enki’s advice. Ninurta’s house was filled with fresh bread and surrounded by its pleasant aroma.
The young god knew bread was scarce and, though he was Enlil’s son, he was greatly shamed by the precious offerings
given him by starving men, so he opened the clouds and let the rain fall. But nothing grew, for the land turned bitter and
became encrusted with salt.
In the seventh year, when people began to eat their young, Atra-hasis went to Enki again.
“We have no more flour to make bread. It rains, but the land no longer grows our crops. Will this scourge never end?”
“Call
together the elders. Tell them to not worship their gods, nor make them offerings nor say prayers nor sing them songs of praise.
Let the earth be as it was in the beginning; before men existed, when the gods struggled to grow their own food. Let the gods
pick up their tools again and go back to tilling the land, without offerings or praise. Let them suffer.”
It
was too much for the gods. Faint with hunger, they yearned to hear prayerful supplications and listen to sweet songs of praise.
They relented and allowed Enki to cleanse the earth with sweet water drawn from the depths of the Abzu. With his pure water,
he washed away the salt and made the land fertile again.
But, in another twelve hundred years, what had happened before occurred
again. The people grew more numerous than ever and earth was filled with their shouting and curses. Enlil said, “I cannot
sleep because of the bellowing of men, but I cannot bring them under control because of my brother, Enki. He protects them.
Because he created them, they are his children. I will see him about this.”
So Enlil went to Enki and said, “You
persuaded us to kill a god and used your power to create men. You imposed our yoke upon them but you also had Mami gift them
with the spoken word. What you did was wrong, for men use their power to shout and curse and argue with each other. Now, you
must swear an oath to correct the wrong you have caused. You must use your power against your creation and create a Flood
to rid the earth of men.”
Enki replied, “Why should I swear an oath? And why should I use my power against
my people? The Flood you mentioned, how do I have the power to give birth to such a thing? That’s work for you, Enlil,
and your son, Ninurta. If you wish a Flood, then tell Ninurta to let it rain till the dams overflow and drown the land.”
Enlil
was furious with Enki. “Then, I shall see it done myself; I will see that the Flood covers the earth. But, brother,
you and all the Anunnaki, must promise not to try to obstruct what I am about to undertake; you must not warn men of my plan.”
With
the other Anunnaki, Enki took an oath that he would not tell Enlil’s plan to any human.
That night, Enki went
out and sat beside the reed wall of Atra-hasis’s house. He spoke aloud, saying, “Wall, listen to me! Reed hut,
make sure you hear my words! Take this house apart and build a boat. Leave your worldly possessions behind and take aboard
living things. Build the boat two stories high and pitch it with bitumen to make it strong and waterproof. For a flood will
come that will last seven days and seven nights and the land will be under water.”
Now, as Enki spoke, Atra-hasis
was inside his house and overheard everything the god said. The next day he hired carpenters and reed workers to tear down
his house and build the boat the god described. The workmen ate and drank as they worked but Atra-hasis kept his distance,
for his heart was breaking over those he knew would soon be drowned and he was vomiting bile.
The day arrived when Ninurta
bellowed from the clouds and the face of the weather changed. The winds came and Atra-hasis
hurried his family and animals inside the boat. Then he cut the mooring rope and had bitumen handed up to seal the door.
The sky turned dark so
no one could see anyone else. The flood roared toward them like a bull and, like a wild ass, the winds screamed overhead.
There was no sun and darkness hid the land. Ninurta opened the clouds and water poured over the land. The goddess Mami watched
the storm from above and wept for her people. “What father would have given birth to a raging sea?” she asked
Enlil. The other gods and goddesses wept with Mami.
After the seventh night, Enlil ordered his son to stop the rain.
As the waters receded, corpses were left strewn about like drowned dragonflies.
But, then, a sweet aroma from an offering
went up and attracted the gods. They hovered overhead to catch the fragrance and Enlil spotted Atra-hasis and his boat. “How
could anyone have survived the catastrophe?” he asked. “No form of life should have escaped. Who, but Enki, would
have done this? My brother has broken his oath!”
Enki heard Enlil and answered, “Atra-hasis must have overheard
me when worry caused me to talk aloud to myself. I did this in defiance of you, Enlil, to make sure life was preserved. But
I never told him; I did not break my oath.”
“Men multiply continually,” Enlil said. “Again
and again they crowd the earth and fill it with noise. I seek only to stop them so I’ll have peace. Why do you continue
to defy me?”
“Because, brother, if you destroyed men to rid the earth of noise, who would be left to grow
our food? It would be as it was in the beginning.”
Enlil perceived the wisdom in Enki’s answer and he was
shamed. “Then, what is to be done?” he asked. “If nothing is changed, in another twelve hundred years, there
will be too many people again.”
Enki said, “To prevent that from ever happening again, let the gods decree
that a third of the women shall be barren and another third shall be unsuccessful in childbirth. In addition, let the women
in the temples be made taboo, so they too will not bear children. By decreeing this, the gods will continue to have men for
their servants but there will never be too many again, and the gods and men will live together evermore at peace.”

Me (mythology)
In Sumerian mythology, a me (Sumerian, conventionally pronounced [mɛ]) or ñe ([ŋɛ]) or parşu (Akkadian) is one of the decrees of the gods foundational to those social institutions, religious practices, technologies, behaviors, mores, and human conditions that make civilization, as the Sumerians understood it, possible. They are fundamental to the Sumerian understanding of the relationship between humanity and the gods
.
Mythological origin and nature
The mes were originally collected by Enlil and then handed over to the guardianship of Enki who was to broker them out to the various Sumerian centers beginning with his own city of Eridu and continuing with Ur, Meluhha, and Dilmun. This is described in the poem, "Enki and the World Order" which also details how he parcels out responsibility for various
crafts and natural phenomena to the lesser gods. Here the mes of various places are extolled but are not themselves
clearly specified, and they seem to be distinct from the individual responsibilities of each divinity as they are mentioned
separately and proper to places, not gods.[1] After a considerable amount of self-glorification on the part of Enki, his daughter Inanna comes before him with a complaint that she has been given short shrift on her divine spheres of influence. Enki does his
best to placate her by pointing up those she does in fact possess.[2]
There is no direct connection implied in the mythological cycle between this poem and that which is our main source of
information on the mes, "Inanna and Enki: The Transfer of the Arts of Civilization from Eridu to Erech", but once again Inanna's discontent is a theme. She is the tutelary deity of Erech and desires to increase its influence and glory by bringing the mes to it from Eridu. She travels to
Enki's Eridu shrine, the E-abzu, in her "boat of heaven", and asks the mes from him after he is well into his cups, whereupon he complies. After
she departs with them, he comes to his senses and notices they are missing from their usual place, and on being informed what
he did with them attempts to retrieve them. The attempt fails and Inanna triumphantly delivers them to Erech.[3]
We never learn what any of the mes look like, yet they are represented as physical objects of some sort. Not only
are they stored in a prominent location in the E-abzu, but Inanna is able to display them to the people of Erech after
she arrives with them in her boat. Some of them are indeed physical objects such as musical instruments, but many are technologies like "basket weaving" or abstractions like "victory". It is not made clear in the poem how such things can be stored, handled, or displayed.
Not all the mes are admirable or desirable traits. Alongside functions like "heroship" and "victory" we also find
"the destruction of cities", "falsehood", and "enmity". The Sumerians apparently considered such evils and sins an inevitable part of humanity's lot in life, divinely and inscrutably decreed, and not to be questioned. [4]

Although more than one hundred mes appear to be mentioned in the latter myth, and the entire list is given four
times, the tablets on which it is found are so fragmentary that we have only a little over sixty of them. In the order given,

Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy (January 7, 1966 - July 16, 1999) was born
Carolyn Jeanne Bessette, the daughter of
DR. & MRS. RICHARD FREEMAN & DR.
William J. Bessette and his then-wife, née Ann Messina. She and her sister Lauren Bessette
died when an aircraft piloted by Carolyn's husband John F. Kennedy, Jr. crashed in the sea near Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts.
Their ashes were buried at sea on July 22, 1999.
She was born in White Plains, Westchester Co., New York, Bessette
grew up in Connecticut and graduated from Boston University in 1988. An occasional model, she eventually became a publicist
for fashion designer Calvin Klein in New York City, where she met Kennedy. She married John Fitzgerald Kennedy, Jr. on September
21, 1996 on Cumberland Island, Georgia.
As soon as she and her then future husband John Jr. began dating, she became the subject
of several gossip newspapers; she would be in tabloid headlines for the rest of her life.
A former Baywatch star and Calvin Klein underwear model named Michael Bergin claims
that Carolyn Bessette had an affair with him.
She became a style icon for
women all around the world with her effortless chic look,
second
only to her mother-in-law
Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.
Carolyn Kennedy should not be confused
with her sister-in-law,
